SOCIETY OF MARY

Architecture HDT were approached by the Society of Mary to provide new offices and facilities for their National Province Centre. This included the bringing together of the Accounts Department and Archives, both having been housed in separate locations.

HDT compiled, in conjunction with Structural Engineers ISP and QS Dean Murray, a pre-purchase condition and feasibility report on the Thorndon Quay premises, a quirky four storey 1980s commercial building.

The resulting fitout involved a complete interior refit of offices and amenities, installation of a lift, re-roofing and upgrading of the entry and ground level facade. The previously installed heavy timber panelling and partitioning has been removed throughout with new glazed partitions allowing for the required privacy for offices while allowing natural light to permeate right through the relatively deep floor plate. A sculpted window reveal with patterned glass has transformed the ordinary north facing aluminium windows of the prayer room off the entrance lobby, referencing the great stained glass tradition and acting as a reminder that this is not just an office but as the focal point for a Catholic order.
