WRAC

The original Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre was designed in 1989 by Burwell Hunt, and has been augmented by Architecture HDT on a number of occasions as it grows to meet changing community needs. In recent times significant alterations include the addition of a fitness centre, new spray park and hydrotherapy pool.

The striking addition of the shallow water spray park presents a bold face to Kilbirnie Park and provides a light filled space that provides aquatic learning, exploration and excitement for children and their families. It is a space that emphasises the fun of water play with the adjacent café and outdoor area and sweeping views across Kilbirnie Park to the north.

The recently completed Hydrotherapy pool is a calm space, bathed in light, providing a dedicated pool for hydrotherapy programmes in an area that was originally set aside for this purpose. With the addition of this dedicated facility the existing teaching pool can be used again for its intended purpose allowing for a greater number of learn-to-swim classes to be offered in the region.
