Escarpment Winery

The exterior of the Escarpment building features clean lines and a minimalist design that blends seamlessly with the rolling hills of the Martinborough region.

In 2022, Architecture HDT worked alongside Apollo Projects to design the new winery building for Escarpment, an established winery located just outside of Martinborough. The building features a large volume space where wine is produced, along with adjoining reception, offices, wine testing laboratory, and a tasting room that boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for breath-taking views of the vineyards and surrounding landscape.

The wine-making block intentionally takes inspiration from the typical farm buildings of the Wairarapa, resulting in a simple yet elegant design. In contrast, the smaller administration block is clad in cedar boards with large windows. The two elements are connected by a feature wall made of boarded concrete, providing a visual contrast.

As visitors approach the building across the vineyard, they are greeted by its imposing presence, taking full advantage of its setting overlooking the natural escarpment.
