Wai o Rua - Stratford Aquatic Centre

 

Architecture HDT Ltd were proud to be part of the winning team for the new Stratford Aquatic Centre - Wai o Rua, with Apollo Projects Ltd. “This was a special collaboration close to the community’s heart and marked nearly a century since the last community pool had been built.”

Wai o Rua – Stratford Aquatic Centre, has been designed with a comprehensive range of aquatic amenities catering to the diverse needs of the community. The pool hall boasts an impressive eight-lane, 25-meter competition pool, while a parallel 25-meter programme pool stands ready to accommodate various aquatic activities, a learn-to-swim area, designed to further skill development, also, a specially curated pool awaits the delight of toddlers, ensuring an inclusive experience for visitors of all ages.

The facility houses a captivating zero-depth splash pad, thoughtfully equipped with an array of interactive water toys. Spectators, seeking both comfort and captivating views, are welcomed by inbuilt seating arrangements strategically positioned to capture scenic panoramas. Uniquely designed pop-out windows allow for bountiful natural sunlight to illuminate the space, offering picturesque views of the surrounding mountains.

The contributions of Stratford District Council (SDC) and local iwi infuse the project with profound cultural significance. Drawing upon their design expertise, the iwi bestowed the facility with distinctive elements, enriching its aesthetic essence. Additionally, honouring the centre with the name 'Wai O Rua', a gift that enhances the end result.
