H2O Xtream Aquatic Centre Upgrades
The H2O Xtream Aquatic Centre redevelopment modernises Upper Hutt’s premier aquatic destination, transforming a well‑loved but ageing 30‑year‑old facility into a contemporary, culturally expressive, family‑centred community asset.
The design extrudes the existing building form northwards to create a new Junior Leisure Pool wing, providing a safe, engaging aquatic environment for young children. The new hydroslide tower, accommodating three slides, becomes a sculptural marker on Fergusson Drive, celebrating the energy and playfulness of the facility.
A foundational aspect of the redevelopment involved meaningful engagement with mana whenua—Te Āti Awa Taranaki Whānui and Ngāti Toa. Their input was crucial in shaping the cultural narrative woven into the architecture, with their stories and values, thoughtfully articulated and translated into the built environment, ensuring authentic representation and respect for local heritage.
Ultimately, the redevelopment delivers a civic building that celebrates local identity, fosters a sense of belonging, and seamlessly incorporates Māori worldviews into the daily experience of the community.
