Massey University Screen Arts

HDT undertook a multi-stage repurposing project within the Category 1 heritage-protected former Dominion Museum to house Massey University’s Screen Arts programme. Central to this was the transformation of the Great Hall into a state-of-the-art performance venue and interactive training space, incorporating a 3d immersive screen environment, motion capture studio and new cinema.

Previously hindered by poor acoustics, the 18m-high Great Hall required extensive acoustic measures, plus additional structural measures to support dual lighting rigs and full-height, performance-grade black-out curtains.

Further facilities added included new computer studios, equipment storage & rental facilities and motion-capture studio with cyclorama constructed over a challenging sloped-floor space.

The existing theaterette was transformed into a high-spec cinema redevelopment, supporting the university’s teaching of the filmmakers of the future. Careful collaboration ensured high-performance technical outcomes. This included a new screen wall and booth for a 4k digital laser projector. Tiered seating was fully reconfigured and re-pitched to optimise sightlines, viewing conditions and prioritise full accessibility. A 37-speaker Dolby ATMOS sound system supported by enhanced acoustic treatments completed the upgrade. Careful design decisions provide an appropriately theatrical experience and allow for the architectural heritage and quality of the interior to shine when the lights go up.
